Interdisciplinary PhD, MS, and Certificate Program

Interdisciplinary PhD - Health Informatics

The Health Informatics subtrack inherits all course requirements of the Informatics PhD program including:

  • a total of 72 semester hours beyond the bachelor's degree, with 18 semester hours satisfying the Certificate in Informatics (see below);
  • completion of both Health Informatics I (3 s.h.) and Health Informatics II (3 s.h.)
  • selection of the remaining 48 semester hours in consultation with the student's advisor from disciplinary courses relevant to the student's particular Health Informatics focus.

The curriculum is individualized to allow for various specializations in Health Informatics such as:

  • imaging
  • text retrieval
  • machine learning algorithms
  • data mining and research on classification schemas.

SAMPLE ELECTIVES representing the interdisciplinary nature of the available coursework can be selected to specifically tailor each individual study plan.

The PhD also requires satisfactory performance on the comprehensive exam, and the production and formal defense of a dissertation that describes original research results.  The requirements described here are in addition to the University-wide requirements of the PhD degree described in the Graduate College Manual of Rules and Regulations, Section XII.

Interdisciplinary MS - Health Informatics

The interdisciplinary MS student will complete a minimum of 32 credits of coursework beyond the bachelor's degree with at least 18 of the 32 hours satisfying the requirements of the Informatics Certificate (see below). The requirements described here are in addition to the university-wide requirements for master's degrees described in the Graduate College Manual of Rules and Regulations, Section X.

The MS is organized as a set of flexible, independent subtracks, which allows each student , along with their advisor, to prepare the most appropriate plan of study.  A list of sample electives provides an overview of possible coursework for individual plans of study.

Health Informatics Certificate

Candidates for the Informatics Certificate apply for admission by designating the specific subtrack to which they are applying.  Candidates must be in good academic standing in an existing graduate degree program.   Each candidate's application will be evaluated by a committee of subtrack faculty, who then make an admissions recommendation to the Graduate College.  Students in this subtrack must complete 22C:104 and 22C:109 (or their equivalents, upon request and approval) as well as 021:275 (Health Informatics I) and 021:280 (Helath Informatics II).
